Series of complaints leads to 50 people arrested in raid

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. - - A total of 50 people were arrested last Friday in a sweeping raid that took place throughout the Coachella Valley.

Riverside County Sheriff's Deputies arrested people with charges ranging from robbery to public drunkenness. Deputy Mike Vasquez says a series of complaints lead up to the raid.

"We had focused areas that were going to go and visit and see and actually listen to the complaints of the citizens so as the complaints had come in, and we kinda created a plan for each community. We went out and affected that plan," Deputy Vasquez said.

Vasquez says people with outstanding warrants were also included. As deputies targeted those individuals, Vasquez says it branched out from there.

"Maybe 5 people went out into one community and began to speak to people, talk to people, start making arrests for those that we found under the use of drugs or had the possession of drugs," Vasquez said.

Some who were arrested are still in custody. Other with less serious crimes were released, and are now awaiting a court hearing.

Coachella Mayor, Steven Hernandez, says it's important to have these types of sweeps to keep the community safe.

"I think it sends the message that we are taking crime seriously in the city. The contrary, or opposite view is to do nothing and so for us, we're not in that state of mind," Mayor Hernandez said.

Meanwhile, authorities say crime sweeps will continue on.
