Palm Springs mayor: Taco Bell hotel sounds 'sort of cool'

PALM SPRINGS, Calif.- - A Taco Bell hotel is coming to Palm Springs and the mayor's interest has been piqued.

In an email to News Channel 3, Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon weighed in on the new pop-up, which, at first, he thought was a gag.

"At first, I thought this was a joke until I found an article online...I have never heard of a Taco Bell Hotel and I certainly have not heard anything about it," read the first email from Moon. "However, it sounds sort of cool.  We do have a younger demographic in PS now!"

"The Bell" will open on August 9 at an unspecified Palm Springs hotel. August 9 also happens to be the first day of Splash House's August festival.

"Apparently, they do plan to open up a 'pop up' business in one of our existing hotels.  We do not know which one yet," Moon wrote in a second email to News Channel 3. "According to...[Assistant City Manager/Dir. Engineering Marcus] Fuller, for a 'pop up' business in an existing and licensed hotel a short term “pop up” business should not need any city approvals except for any exterior signage they request to put up.  This is all we know at this time."

Moon wrote that Yum Brands, the parent company of Taco Bell, told Fuller that the selected hotel will be announced in June.

“The Bell stands to be the biggest expression of the Taco Bell lifestyle to date. It will be fun, colorful, flavorful and filled with more than what our fans might expect,” said Taco Bell’s Chief Global Brand Officer Marisa Thalberg in a news release on the pop-up. “Also, just like some of our most sought-after food innovation, this hotel brings something entirely new for lucky fans to experience and enjoy.”

The Bell will have the standard on-brand amenities of any regular brick and mortar store. The extra sauce, so to speak, will come in the form of a gift shop, an on-site salon where guests can get "Taco Bell-inspired nail art, fades, and a braid bar", as well as "new menu surprises" according to the news release.
