Desert Hills Outlets in Cabazon are now charging $5 to park in the East Village garage.
The new payment policy is not being well received by customers and employees. Some employees even worry about their safety if they have to park too far away and return to their cars at night.
"Last night, well yesterday, I came in at 1:30 (p.m.) to close we didn't get out until 10 (p.m.) so I had to walk all the way to McDonald's by myself. Yeah it's scary"
When outlet parking gets congested, people sometimes resort to parking in the surrounding residential communities.
Employees said they wish there were more parking spots exclusively for them, so they wouldn't have to compete with customers who now also don't want to pay.
Desert Hills representatives say the new policy is to "accommodate consumer demand and improve the overall customer experience" and to give customers "more time to shop their favorite luxury brands,"
Employees have started an online petition to remove charges. As of 6 p.m., the petition is 500 signatures away from the goal. Click here for the petition.
"It's a problem every day. During weekends, holidays, it gets crowded. It's already a problem without pay parking," Bryan Stoa, an outlet store employee.
Desert Hills representatives say they created the new parking policy so people would at least have the option to pay if they didn't want to drive around looking for parking, however in the meantime employees here continue to sign the petition.
