Three Coachella Valley high schools named among state's best

COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif.- - Three Coachella Valley high schools have been named to U.S. News and World Report's Best High Schools for 2018 list. Palm Desert High School, La Quinta High School, and Cathedral City High School received high marks in the ranking which evaluated over 20,000 high schools nationwide.

The two Desert Sands Unified School District schools, Palm Desert High and La Quinta High, received silver medals and were ranked No. 395 and No. 485 in the state, respectively.

"A four-step process is used [to determine the list]-" said Mary Perry, public information officer for DSUSD. "The first three steps use performance on math and reading parts of state proficiency tests and graduation rates. Schools passing these first steps were then assessed by the number of students preparing for college-level work. This was determined by test data from the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate test data."

Palm Springs Unified School District was represented on the list by Cathedral City High, which received a bronze medal and a ranking of No. 539 in the state.

"CCHS is proud to be recognized by U.S. News and World Reports as a ranked high school. We believe that the success of our school is due to the dedication of the staff, students and community. Our Academy, AVID and  International Baccalaureate Programs work in unison with our extra-curricular offerings in order to offer a well-rounded experience for our students," said CCHS Principal Guillermo Chavez.

The process began with an initial list of 28,813 public schools from all 50 states and the District of Columbia and was then whittled down to 20,548 schools to be analyzed. Close to 8,000 schools didn't make the analysis cut based on student population sizes that were too small to properly rank.
