Todd McLellan will return next season as head coach of the San Jose Sharks, the team announced Monday.
After the Sharks were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs in the first round by the St. Louis Blues, general manager Doug Wilson said Monday, he needed time to evaluate along with McLellan what their needs are. He also wanted to make sure McLellan was fully recovered from the concussion he suffered in February when he was hit by a stick during a game.
Along with the announcement came word that McLellan will have at least one new assistant coach. Their penalty kill finished 29th out of 30 teams this season.
Wilson made it clear that, while McLellan is keeping his job, he almost certainly will need to show improvement next season if he is to keep it.
"We look at it that when you sign up for this business, you're on the hot seat," Wilson told the San Jose Mercury News. "That's the way it should be. You set high expectations, and we're all big boys."
