The new Chevrolet SS is replacing the Impala in the Sprint Cup Series in 2013, the automaker announced Thursday.

The SS will be Chevrolet's will debut in its race configuration in the 2013 Daytona 500. The car is the same model as the one that will return to showroom floors late in 2013 as a 2014 model.

The three manufacturers -- Ford (Fusion), Dodge (Charger) and Toyota (Camry) -- have introduced their 2013 models as NASCAR shifts to a new body style for the first time since the 2007 Car of Tomorrow arrived. All four cars will debut in the Daytona 500.

"As a passionate race fan and performance enthusiast, I am thrilled that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR racecar in the SS that is closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale," said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, in a statement. "The Chevrolet SS is a great example of how GM is able to leverage its global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience that extends beyond the track."
