COACHELLA, Calif. -

A felony animal cruelty charge was filed Monday against an Irvine woman who allegedly left her pet in her vehicle in Coachella for more than a day, resulting in the dog's death.

Charu Khanna, 30, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning at
the Larson Justice Center in Indio.

Late on May 5, a California Highway Patrol officer saw a dog inside a
locked vehicle parked at Vista Del Norte and Dillon Road and contacted
sheriff's deputies, who interviewed people who worked in the area. They learned that the vehicle was there for more than a day, with the windows closed, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Robert Bishop said.

Deputies found Khanna, who owned the dog and vehicle, and arrested her
on suspicion of felony cruelty to an animal resulting in death, he said.

Khanna was booked into the county jail in Indio and posted a $5,000
bond, according to jail records.
