Authorities say a Southern California woman has been arrested and dozens of roosters were seized after a cockfighting and betting operation was broken up.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department said in a statement Sunday that 40-year-old Jaquelyn Acosta was arrested at her Jurupa Valley home, where deputies discovered the cockfighting on Saturday night.
About 50 people were detained, and 40 roosters were taken from the scene. The sheriff's statement says Acosta was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, operating an illegal gamecock fight and other counts.
It was not clear whether she had hired an attorney, and no phone listings for Acosta could be found.
