BEAUMONT - Cal Fire crews have contained a wildfire burning in an area off Highway 60 known as "The Badlands."
It broke out alongside the Moreno Valley Freeway this afternoon, authorities said.
The seven-acre blaze was reported around 3 p.m. near the 60 and Gilman Springs Road, just east of Moreno Valley, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The California Highway Patrol shut down one lane of the two-lane eastbound 60 for emergency crews, causing traffic to back up. There are few roads in the rugged, hilly expanse that stretches between Moreno Valley and Beaumont.
CHP officers re-opened the stretch of roadway just before 4:30pm.
Dozens of firefighters were working to contain the blaze, supported by four air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter. The contained it by 3:45pm, but expect mop up operations to take another 4 hours.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
