PALM DESERT, Calif. - The Coachella Valley Mosquitio and Vector Control kicked off Mosquito Control Awareness Week (April 16-22) with their 2nd annual Fight the Bite 5K.
The run helped raise awareness about existing threats to the Coachella Valley from mosquito-born diseases, like West Nile and Chikungunya.
"this time of year is when temperatures start to warm. We had a lot of rain this year, not only in the Desert, but across California....the virsuses that mosquitos transmit during summer time, start to be transmitted this time of year...this is when we want to start making people aware," said Jeremy Wittie, General Manager at Coachella Valley Vector Control District.
An exhibit helped educate people about how they can eliminate the manmade sources of standing water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitos.
