Tickets are on sale for the World's Championship Chili Cookoff, which will be held in Palm Springs this year, the event's producer said today.
Spa Resort Casino will host the 47th annual world championship cookoff, considered one of the largest food festival contests in the country, Oct. 11-13. The event will include 400 competitors, 50 vendors and food trucks and two stages with live music. Proceeds will benefit Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs, Pegasus Riding Academy in Palm Desert and the Palm Springs USO, according to event producer Jeff Hocker.
The World's Championship Chili Cookoff is sanctioned by the International Chili Society, and contestants must pre-qualify by winning first place in ICS-sanctioned cookoffs throughout the year. The four main categories are traditional red chili, chili verde, salsa and homestyle -- a total of $55,000 is awarded to the winners.
This year there are two new competition divisions, restaurant and military/public service, which are given separate prizes from the main cookoff. Judges include past world champions, celebrity chefs and local dignitaries, according to Hocker.
Besides chili, country, classic rock and Latin bands will perform, there will be children's activities, 50 vendors of art and food.
VIP admission is $50 and includes 25 tasting tickets, access to food and liquor tastings and a commemorative apron. General admission tickets include two tasting passes and are $10 before Sept. 15 and $15 after.
