THERMAL, Calif. -

Flames destroyed a Nextel tower today in Thermal and scorched about a quarter acre of a nearby date grove but no injuries were reported, a Riverside County Fire Department official said.

Firefighters were dispatched at 12:17 p.m. to Avenue 60 and Harrison Street, where the fire damaged a nearby electrical building, county fire spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson said.

Large parking boxes at the Jewel Date Company also caught fire. Firefighters let the pallets burn while they provided protection to a nearby building.

What caused the fire has not been determined.
