LA QUINTA, Calif. -

A 32-year-old Coachella man was behind bars today for allegedly ramming his pickup truck into the back of a car carrying a couple and a 3-year-old girl in La Quinta while under the influence of alcohol.

Witnesses allegedly saw a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Josue George Montano ``intentionally ramming'' the back of a Toyota Camry several times in a parking lot in the 79000 block of Highway 111 about 8 p.m. on Wednesday, sheriff's Sgt. Randall Wedertz said.

Montano had allegedly followed the car from a business on Corporate Way and ``tailgated the Camry for no known reason,'' Wedertz said.

The Camry's driver's husband, who was a passenger in the car, called police. The woman, ``fearing for their safety,'' drove into the parking lot on Highway 111, Wedertz said.

When a sheriff's deputy arrived, he saw the pickup ramming the car. Montano got out and walked toward the Camry, and more deputies arrived and ordered him to get down on the ground. He complied and was arrested, Wedertz said.

No one was hurt, the sergeant said.

He said deputies saw beer cans inside the pickup and suspected alcohol was a factor. He didn't say if Montano knew the occupants of the Camry or give a possible motive.

Montano was booked at the county jail in Indio on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, endangering a child, and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned Friday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, according to jail records.
