Riverside County helps fight 9 wildfires near San Diego

Crew from Palm Springs joining the fight

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Firefighters continue to battle raging wildfires in San Diego County on Thursday. Nine fires have been reported and Riverside County has sent about 300 firefighters to the area to help with containment efforts.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 spoke to officials with the Palm Springs Fire Department. They've sent one of their crews to the fire burning in the San Marcos area to help protect structures from a growing wildfire.

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors has pledged to continue offering support.

"I am so proud of our firefighters, and constantly amazed by their dedication and tireless effort," supervisor Jeff Stone said. "We will do everything we can to help San Diego County and its residents as teams fight these horrific fires."

Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department has provided resources in the air and on the ground to help control the wildfires.

Officials said five engines and a battalion chief with Riverside County were able to save a three-story condominium during the Poinsettia Fire in Carlsbad.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their homes and with our first responders as they work to contain and control these fires," Stone said. "Come home safe."

Cal Fire has already responded to over 100% more wildfires than average, and May's fire activity has only continued the trend.

Much of Southern California remains under a Red Flag Warning for high fire danger due to the Santa Ana winds and low humidity, which is expected to last through Thursday.
