The Imperial Irrigation District is celebrating Public Power Week with light bulb exchanges in two Coachella Valley cities beginning Tuesday, a district official said today.

Imperial Irrigation District customers can bring up to five used incandescent bulbs and receive five free compact fluorescent light bulbs at the exchanges. Compact fluorescent bulbs produce the same amount of light, use 75 percent less electricity and last longer than standard bulbs, district spokeswoman Marion Champion said.

Exchanges, which run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., are scheduled at the following locations:
   -- Tuesday at Indio City Hall, 100 Civic Center Mall;
   -- Oct. 15 at Coachella City Hall, 1515 Sixth St.

Customers need to show a valid California ID or driver license and a copy of their utility bill. The Imperial Irrigation District provides electricity and water in the eastern Coachella Valley and in Imperial Valley.

IID also is doing exchanges in Imperial County.

Public Power Week is Oct. 6-12 and is observed by more than 2,000
electric utilities, Champion said.
