Secret Service code names through history

Since the Secret Service now scrambles its radio communications, there’s no longer much of a security reason for giving presidents and candidates code names, but they are still used out of tradition. Here are some of the not-so-secret code names White House seekers and those close to them have received over the years.

When Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum had Secret Service protection, he picked the name “Petrus,” which he said was a nod to his grandfather, Pietro. (Both translate as Peter.)
