On March, 1 2012, Maryland became the ninth state to allow gay marriage when the governor signed a bill into law, but opponents gathered enough signatures to force the issue onto the ballot. Voters affirmed the law in a November 2012 state referendum, and the law went into effect on Jan. 1, 2013.
