Police stepping up patrols for Super Bowl Sunday

COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. - Police agencies in the Coachella Valley will be having an all out blitz of enforcement on our roads to make sure people are sober behind the wheel this weekend.

Police will be on the look out for drivers who are under the influence of not just alcohol but cannabis too.

This is the first Super Bowl Sunday after recreational cannabis use became legal in the state.

"The DUI is still considered a DUI regardless, the substance is just different but the driving impairment they are looking for is still the same," said Armando Munoz, investigator with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Dept.

The California Highway Patrol as well as the Palm Springs Police Department will be using DUI checkpoints throughout the weekend to check for drivers under the influence.

As always, it’s a good idea to have a designated driver or get a taxi or use a ride-share service if you plan on having a few drinks while watching the game.
