LOS ANGELES, Calif. -

(AP) - Workers have carefully removed remnants of a crumbling pipe that's part of Los Angeles' original water system.

The pipe was discovered earlier this month after construction crews demolished a restaurant near City Hall to make way for a new development.

Elected officials were on hand Saturday as the developer removed the pipe. The artifact will be preserved for future display.

The pipe was part of a 90-mile network that fed water from the Los Angeles River to the burgeoning city starting in 1781.
