CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -

One maintenance worker died and another was injured when they were struck by a vehicle on Cathedral Canyon Drive this afternoon, a Cathedral City police spokesman said.

The two workers were near a trailer attached to a truck that was stopped at a curb on northbound Cathedral Canyon. Another vehicle struck the trailer, pinning and crushing one of the workers, who died at the scene, Cathedral City police Lt. Chuck Robinson said.

``The other guy was thrown into the grass,'' he said, and was transported to a local hospital with major injuries.

Northbound Cathedral Canyon from Perez Road to Dinah Shore Drive was expected to be closed for several hours for the police investigation.

Northbound traffic was being diverted to Kieley Road, according to police.

The accident happened around 2 p.m.
