1863: U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pa., four and a half months after the Union armies defeated Confederacy forces at the Battle of Gettysburg. The short speech, which came to be regarded as one of the greatest speeches in American history, begins with the now-iconic phrase "Four score and seven years ago," referring to the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
