1972: In Laurel, Maryland, Arthur Bremer shoots Alabama Gov. George Wallace five times while Wallace is campaigning for U.S. president. The assassination attempt left Wallace paralyzed from the waist down and he used a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. On Aug. 4, 1972, Bremer was sentenced to 63 years in prison, later reduced to 53 years. He ended up serving more than 35 years and was released on parole on Nov. 9, 2007.
