1961: The Freedom Riders bus is fire-bombed near Anniston, Ala., and the civil rights protesters are beaten by an angry mob. A second bus was also attacked in Anniston when it arrived the following day and again by a mob of Ku Klux Klan members in Birmingham, Ala.
