1943: Singer-songwriter Mary Wells, one of Motown's first singing superstars best known for songs such as "My Guy," "You Beat Me to the Punch" and "Two Lovers," is born in Detroit, Mich. She died of throat cancer at age 49 on July 26, 1992.
