1893: The World's Columbian Exposition opens in Chicago. The fair, held to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World in 1492, featured mostly temporary buildings designed by Daniel Burnham and Frederick Law Olmsted in a French neoclassical style surrounding a large pond of water in Jackson Park. Nicknamed the "White City" for the white stucco exteriors of the buildings, the fairgrounds hosted pavilions from 46 nations and drew nearly 26 million visitors before closing on Oct. 30, 1893.
