2011: Pope John Paul II is beatified by his successor, Pope Benedict XVI, after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints attributed one miracle to him, the healing of a French nun from Parkinson's disease. Beatification is a recognition by the Catholic Church of a dead person's entrance into heaven and capacity to intercede on behalf of individuals who pray in his or her name. A second miracle was attributed to him in July 2013 and he was canonized as a saint, together with Pope John XXIII, on April 27, 2014.
