1917: Writer and illustrator Will Eisner, best known for his comic book series "The Spirit," is born in Brooklyn, N.Y. One of the earliest cartoonists to work in the American comic book industry, the Eisner Award, given to recognize achievements each year in the comics industry, was named in his honor. Eisner died at age 87 on Jan. 3, 2005, of complications from a quadruple bypass surgery performed about two weeks earlier.
