1971: A Los Angeles, Calif., jury recommends the death penalty for Charles Manson and three female followers who had earlier been convicted of the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders. However, their sentences would be automatically reduced to life in prison when the California Supreme Court abolished the state's death penalty in February 1972.
