1931: Nine young black males are arrested in Paint Rock, Alabama, and accused of raping two white women. The case was first heard in Scottsboro, Alabama, earning the group the name "The Scottsboro Boys," in three rushed trials, where the defendants received poor legal representation. The cases were ultimately tried three times, each time resulting in guilty verdicts despite one of the alleged victims admitting to fabricating the rape story. Charges were finally dropped for four of the nine defendants, with sentences for the rest ranging from 75 years in prison to death. The case is now widely considered a miscarriage of justice that led to the end of all-white juries in the South.
