1916: After Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, N.M., President Woodrow Wilson sends 4,800 United States troops led by Army Gen. John J. Pershing over the U.S.-Mexico border in an ultimately unsuccessful pursuit of the Mexican Revolutionary general. The nine-month pursuit ended when the U.S. entered into World War I and Pershing was called back.
