1996: At a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland, 43-year-old gunman Thomas Hamilton shoots and kills 16 students and one teacher. Hamilton also injured another 15 people before committing suicide. In response to the public debate that arose after the attack, the British government enacted two laws that effectively made private ownership of handguns illegal in the United Kingdom.
