1939: Singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka, who has written or co-written more than 500 songs for himself and other artists in a career lasting more than 50 years, is born in Brooklyn, N.Y. Some of Sedaka's best known songs include "Calendar Girl," "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen," "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" and "Next Door to an Angel." He also wrote songs such as "Where the Boys Are" and "Stupid Cupid" for Connie Francis, "It Hurts to Be in Love" for Gene Pitney, "Love Will Keep Us Together" for The Captain & Tennille, and "When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door)" and "The Girl I Left Behind Me" for The Monkees.
