2002: Film director John Frankenheimer, best known for movies such as "Birdman of Alcatraz," "The Manchurian Candidate," "Seven Days in May," "Black Sunday" and "Ronin," dies at age 72 in Los Angeles, California, from a stroke due to complications following spinal surgery. He's seen here in 1962.
