2009: Robert McNamara, who served as U.S. Secretary of Defense under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson from 1961 to 1968, dies at the age of 93 in Washington, D.C. McNamara played a large role in escalating American involvement in the Vietnam War as Defense secretary. Following that, he served as president of the World Bank from 1968 to 1981. Prior to his time in public service, he helped rebuild Ford Motor Company after World War II and briefly served as Ford's president.
