1988: Michael Dukakis is selected as the Democratic presidential nominee at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. Dukakis and his vice presidential running mate, U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen of Texas, lost handily to Vice President George H. W. Bush, the Republican Party's candidate, in November.
