1862: The first American ironclad warship, the USS Monitor, is launched. The Monitor would become famous for its battle with the CSS Virginia during the Civil War, the first-ever battle fought between two ironclads, before foundering while under tow during a storm off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on Dec. 31, 1862.
