1965: Disc jockey Alan Freed, who popularized the term "rock and roll" and music of that style, dies at age 43 in Palm Springs, Calif., from uremia and cirrhosis brought on by alcoholism. Freed's career was derailed by the payola scandal that hit the broadcasting industry in the early 1960s.
