1994: A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hits Northridge, California, killing 57 people and injuring more than 8,700. The quake, which had one of the highest ground accelerations ever instrumentally recorded in an urban area and was felt as far away as Las Vegas, also caused an estimated $20 billion in damage, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.
