1821: John C. Breckinridge, who represented Kentucky in both houses of Congress and, in 1856 under President James Buchanan, became the youngest-ever vice president of the United States, is born in Lexington, Kentucky. He was expelled from the U.S. Senate after joining the Confederate Army, where he eventually rose to the rank of major general and was appointed Confederate secretary of war late in the Civil War.
