1885: Author Sinclair Lewis, the first writer from the United States to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, is born in Sauk Centre, Minn. Among his most popular works are the novels "Main Street," "Babbitt," "Arrowsmith," "Elmer Gantry" and "Dodsworth."
