1887: Hall of Fame baseball pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander, who won 373 games and struck out 2,198 over 20 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals, is born in Elba, Neb. Alexander won a World Series championship with the Cardinals in 1926.
