1809: Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865, is born in Hodgenville, Ky. Generally considered one of the greatest American presidents, Lincoln successfully led the United States through its greatest constitutional, military, and moral crisis -- the American Civil War -- preserving the Union.
