1923: Actor Ted Knight, best known for his TV roles on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Too Close for Comfort," and for playing Judge Elihu Smails in "Caddyshack," is born Tadeusz Wladyslaw Konopka in Terryville, Conn. Knight, who won two Emmys in six nominations for his "Mary Tyler Moore Show" role, died of colorectal cancer at age 62 in August 1986.
