1926: Joe Paterno, the head coach of the college football Penn State Nittany Lions from 1966 to 2011, is born in Brooklyn, New York. With 409 victories, Paterno is the winningest coach in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision history. His career ended in 2011 with his dismissal from the team as a result of the Penn State child sex abuse scandal. He died of complications from lung cancer on Jan. 22, 2012.
