U.S. Senate

2012: U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, the first Japanese American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, dies of respiratory complications at age 88 in Bethesda, Md. A Medal of Honor recipient who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Inouye was the most senior U.S. senator at the time of his death. He is also the second-longest serving U.S. senator in history after Robert Byrd and continuously represented Hawaii in the U.S. Congress since it achieved statehood in 1959 until the time of his death.
