1979: Walter O'Malley, who owned the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers team in Major League Baseball since 1950 and brought baseball to the West Coast, dies at age 75 of congestive heart failure while being treated for cancer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1958, he moved the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and coordinated the move of the New York Giants to San Francisco at a time when there were no teams west of Kansas City, Missouri.
