1978: Pope Paul VI dies at age 80 at the Papal summer residence, Castel Gandolfo, in Italy following a massive heart attack. Paul VI, who used his 15-year papacy to foster improved ecumenical relations with Orthodox and Protestants, would be succeeded by Pope John Paul I.
