1929: Yasser Arafat is born in Cairo, Egypt. The engineer and politician would become chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, the first president of the Palestinian National Authority, and leader of the Fatah political party and former paramilitary group. He died at age 75 on Nov. 11, 2004.
