1965: Film director Sam Mendes, whose best known movies include "American Beauty," "Road to Perdition" and "Skyfall," is born in Reading, Berkshire, England. He won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Directors Guild of America Award for directing "American Beauty."
