1986: Wallis Simpson, the American socialite for whom King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom abdicated in 1936, dies at the age of 89 in Paris, France. Simpson was divorced from her first husband and was pursuing a divorce of her second when Edward abdicated after just less than a year as king to marry her, becoming the only British monarch to have voluntarily renounced the throne since the Anglo-Saxon period. The couple remained married through Edward's death from throat cancer at age 77 in May 1972.
